The story is about a man who moves to Mumbai from Delhi to help his family's Indian restaurant but instead falls in love with the city's language, Hindi, which he learns to speak fluently while writing a novel in it. The film's soundtrack was composed by A. R. Rahman. It also has an item number sung by Sonu Nigam, Shreya Ghoshal and Udit Narayan, Himesh Reshammiya, Kailash Kher and Tulsi Kumar among others.The musical score is composed by A. R. Rahman with lyrics written by Faiz Anwar.

The film received mixed to positive reviews from critics, with praise directed towards the performance of Madhavan's character as well as its message behind the film but criticism towards the screenplay and its story issues that involve stereotyping of Indian culture which are based on American stereotypes about Indians . Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama gave the film 3.5 stars out of 5 and said, "English Vinglish is high on content, low on masala elements. It's a neatly-packaged film that should appeal to the class audience." Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express gave the film 2.5 stars out of 5 and said, "Rajamouli's English Vinglish has its heart in the right place but it's not that funny or hard-hitting or wise. Like other Rajamouli films, it's stylish and free of cliches." Farhan Akhtar of News18 gave the film 3 stars out of 5 and said, "It is a light-hearted feather in the cap of an otherwise severely under-appreciated filmmaker. And while we would concede that it's not Rajamouli's best film — we'd still argue that this one deserves to be seen." Sanjukta Sharma of Rediff gave the film 2.5 stars out of 5 and said, "The idea behind 'Good job, you know Hindi' is interesting and can easily be implemented in real life. The problem arises when you attempt to replicate what you see on screen on the big screen. Apurva Asrani of "Tribune India" praised actress Anjali Patil's performance as the titular character but criticised the screenplay writing that "Madhavan's Vinglish is entertaining at parts, funny at bits and ends up as a predictable rom-com. The film is a sort of experiment with language as a central theme.  The dialogues, Mumbai and Hindi, are layered and interspersed with English words.  The filmmaker clearly loves his language and wants to communicate the same to the audience. This approach does make for an interesting watch.
